Air Rings for External Diameters
The air ring has a precision ground hardened steel body with built-in air gage nozzles. When the ring is slipped over the workpiece, the resulting back pressure is sensed by the air gage readout and displayed as the diameter of the part. Air rings come in 2 and 3-jet configurations. The 3-jet air ring checks for 3-lobe out-of-round conditions prevalent in centerless ground parts that cannot be detected with a 2-point gage.
Below are some examples of Standard Air Rings, and Air Snap C-Gages.

Standard Air Rings
Center-Jet Air Rings

Center-jet Air Rings have gaging nozzles near the center of the body. Placing the jets away from the edge of the body provides better wear resistance.
Shoulder-Style Air Rings

Shoulder-Style Air Rings are ideal for measuring to the very edge of the work piece. Extra-Close Styles are also Available for full gaging coverage.
Air Snap C-Gages
Air Snap C-Gages provide side access, making them a convenient means to measure a shaft’s O.D. while the workpiece is mounted on a grinder or in a CNC machine. Western Gage Corporation’s C-Gages feature carbide backstops and Kevlar reinforced nylon bumpers that prevent marking parts.
